We've all been there. January 1st rolls around, and we're full of enthusiasm for that new goal. Come February? The motivation has fizzled out, and we're back to old habits.
I’ve been really paying attention to this, watching people online, in real life and so on. What’s their secret to making changes stick? So what's the difference between changes that stick and those that don't? It's not about willpower. It's not about being "strong enough." One thing they all have in common is their MINDSET. It's all about mindset.
Here's what I've learned from working with clients making significant life changes and what actually works.
- Never Stop Learning
Remember when you were a child, endlessly curious about everything? "Why is the sky blue?" "How do birds fly?" "What happens if I mix these two things together?"
That curiosity doesn't disappear – it’s replaced when we start questioning things with "should’s" and "supposed to’s."
Successful clients are the one’s who approach change like a child learning something new:
- They ask questions
- They stay inquisitive
- They're not afraid to switch things around and try a different approach
- They experiment without judging themselves
When you allow yourself to be curious about your own patterns and behaviours, change becomes an adventure rather than a chore.
- Build Resilience: Setbacks Are Part of the Journey
There will be hurdles along the way. You will have setbacks. There will be challenging situations you find yourself in. You might slip back into old patterns.
And that's completely normal.
The difference between people who succeed and those who give up isn't that successful people never stumble, it's that when they do, they bounce back.
- They don't let one difficult day define their entire journey
- They don't interpret a setback as failure
- They use challenges as opportunities to learn and grow stronger
Resilience isn't something you're born with. It's a skill you develop. Every time you get back up, you're building that mental muscle.
- Challenge Your Inner Critic:
We're all human, and life has its ups and downs. It's hard to stay positive all the time, especially in this day and age with so much challenging news around us.
But here's a game-changer: learning to recognise when you're being negative and consciously choosing to reframe.
It's easier than you think.
Example:
❌ Negative thought: "I just missed the bus. Damn it. Now I have to wait another 10 minutes. I'm hopeless. I'm always running late."
✅ Reframed thought: "I could use this time to walk to the next bus stop and get some steps in. Or I could call a friend or family member and check they're okay. Actually, these 10 minutes might be exactly what I needed."
The technique:
- Notice when you're talking negatively to yourself
- 🛑. Stop
- Take 3 deep breaths to calm your nervous system
- Challenge yourself to think about the situation in a different way
It's like playing a game with your mind. The more you practice, the more automatic it becomes.
- Make a Plan (and Write It Down)
Vague intentions rarely lead to lasting change. "I want to be healthier" or "I should stress less" sound good, but they're not actionable.
Successful change requires:
- A clear plan written down (not just in your head)
- Realistic, specific goals
- Action steps you can actually follow
When you write it down, you're making a commitment to yourself. You're also creating something you can refer back to when motivation wavers.
Be proactive. Make it happen. Soon, you'll find yourself in a much better place than you imagined.
- Change Is a Tool, Not a Threat
Life doesn't follow a linear path. Plans change. Circumstances shift. Unexpected things happen.
The people who succeed at making lasting changes are those who can adapt.
- They go with the flow when needed
- They're willing to change direction
- They don't see flexibility as failure—they see it as wisdom
View change not as a threat, but as a tool. When you're adaptable, you're in control, not at the mercy of circumstances.
- Believe in Yourself: Why Not You? Why Not Now?
This might be the most important point of all.
Believe. Believe you can make this happen.
Why not you? Why not now?
We all only have one shot at this life. You owe it to yourself to give it your best shot.
The changes you want to make, whether it's quitting smoking, managing anxiety, overcoming a fear, or breaking a habit, are all possible. Not because change is easy, but because you are capable.
When You Feel Stuck: How Hypnotherapy Can Help
Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we find ourselves stuck. We know what we should do, but we can't seem to do it. We set goals, but old patterns keep pulling us back.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.
And here's the good news: feeling stuck doesn't mean you're broken. It usually means there are underlying patterns or beliefs getting in your way. Patterns you might not even be consciously aware of.
This is where working with a CBT hypnotherapist can make all the difference.
Together, we can:
- Identify the patterns that have kept you stuck
- Explore what's really holding you back (it's often not what you think)
- Develop practical strategies tailored specifically to you
- Use hypnosis to reshape those core beliefs and doubts at a subconscious level
Why CBT + Hypnosis?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps you understand and change the thought patterns and behaviours that aren't serving you. It's practical, evidence-based, and effective.
Hypnosis works at a deeper level accessing your subconscious mind where your core beliefs live. This is where real, lasting transformation happens.
When you combine both approaches, you're working on change from every angle:
- Consciously understanding your patterns (CBT)
- Subconsciously rewiring your automatic responses (hypnosis)
- Creating new neural pathways that support your goals
You don't have to figure this out alone. You don't have to keep trying the same approaches that haven't worked in the past.
